Diagnoses and treats based on patterns (syndromes) of disharmony rather than isolated symptoms, enabling more accurate and effective healing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)?

TCM is a holistic health system developed over thousands of years in China. It focuses on restoring balance and harmony in the body using natural therapies, including herbal medicine, acupuncture, cupping, and dietary guidance. In Ontario, TCM is regulated by CTCMPAO.

Is TCM safe?

When practiced by a qualified, licensed practitioner, TCM is generally considered safe. Herbs are prescribed according to individual needs, and treatments like acupuncture use sterile, single-use needles. Always inform your practitioner of any medical conditions, medications, or allergies before starting treatment.

Do I need a referral from my doctor?

In most cases, a referral is not required. However, check with your insurance provider—some plans require a physician’s referral for coverage.

How does TCM differ from Western medicine?

Western medicine often focuses on diagnosing and treating specific diseases, while TCM looks at the body as an interconnected system and aims to address the root cause of imbalance. Many people use both approaches together for a more comprehensive health strategy.

Are there any side effects?

Most people experience minimal or no side effects. Occasionally, there may be mild bruising from acupuncture or cupping, or temporary digestive changes from herbal formulas. These usually resolve quickly.

How long will it take to see results?

Response time varies depending on the condition, its severity, and your overall health. Acute issues may improve in 1–3 sessions, while chronic conditions often require ongoing care over weeks or months.

How should I prepare for my first TCM appointment?

Wear loose, comfortable clothing.

Avoid heavy meals and alcohol before treatment.

Bring a list of current medications and medical history.

Be ready to discuss your lifestyle, diet, and sleep patterns—these are important in TCM diagnosis.
